Web Builder Resumes Updates

June, 1999:

Apologies to anyone who missed the May program and wondered if June's would appear. They are both now on-line, as well as the remaining pujas for 1999 and those for the first half of 2000.

Also, other significant changes to the site over the last year and half:

  • More information: The monthly program pages (such as June, 1999) now give some detail about Swami Shantarupanda's weekly classes. They also give some information as well as links to other web sites about special events such as Hindu worships and birthday celebrations of disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. The master program page also now has a selection of quotations about Vedanta from Western scholars.
  • New Animated Menu: For visitors using Netscape Navigator version 4, the Vedanta Society's home page now displays an animated menu. Using recent features of Javascript and the Document Object Model (also known as Dynamic HTML), this menu implements an original "light-animation" technique to add interest and aesthetic appeal. Each menu item "rolls" through a scale of shades of the same color, alternately brightening and darkening, until the mouse cursor passes over an item. On the mouse entering a menu item, that item sticks in its brightest state. Once the mouse moves out of the menu, the animation resumes where it last left off. This animation occurs without any special software or browser plug-ins, and works equally on all computer platforms where Netscape has deployed their version 4 browser. It currently does not work for Internet Explorer, or Netscape's latest (version 5) browser. When these or older (such as Netscape version 3) browsers visit the site, they get the previous version of the home page, without the animation.

The Vedanta Society of Portland has a site on the World Wide Web at:

      http://www.cyberhighway.net/~vedanta

The site features a history of the Society by Swami Shantarupananda, with rare portrait photographs of the Swamis that figure prominently in that history. Visitors will also find the monthly program, contact information, and several links to interesting web pages with information about Vedanta, Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother, and Swami Vivekananda.

We invite all members of the Vedanta community and other interested persons to visit and send us comments. During the coming weeks and months we will add new pages, including a list of the annual pujas, a photo gallery, and a description of our retreat.
