Swami Vivekananda Statue Installed in Chicago - A First in America

The first American statue of Swami Vivekananda (1863 - 1902), the Hindu monk who introduced Hinduism tothe West, was installed on Sunday, July 12, 1998, at the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, in Lemont, IL.  The statue is a gift from the Vivekananda Vedanta Society of Chicago, a branch of the Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission.  Thousands attended this historic event.  A copy of a nice article on the event by religious writer Gustav Niebuhr appeared in various Internet newsgroups.
