Celebrations This Month

This month the Society celebrates Kalpataru Day, Saraswati Puja, and the birthday anniversaries of five of the monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. The headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission in India website offers descriptions of the direct disciples' lives. Those interested in learning some details of the lives of these great souls can use the following links. Special Programs

Friday, Jan. 1, at 12 Noon: worship of Sri Ramakrishna, in the Shrine, in honor of Kalpataru Day. On January 1, 1886, the year of his passing, Sri Ramakrishna walked in the garden of the Kasipur house and blessed all who were present there with the spiritual experience their hearts desired. Devotees have described the event as the Master tranforming himself into the mythic Kalpataru, or wish-fullfilling tree.

Evening mediation will start at 6:30, followed at 7:30 by reading from Sri Ramakrishna, the Great Master.

Friday, Jan. 8, Swami Vivekananda's Birthday celebration, in the Shrine, beginning with worship at 6:00 PM, followed by offerings of flowers and potluck dinner.

Tuesday, Jan. 19, Swami Brahmananda's Birthday celebration, in the Shrine, beginning with worship at 6:00 PM, followed by offerings of flowers and potluck dinner.

Sunday School - 11:00 AM

Teachers: Priscilla Meddaugh, Kathe Fradkin, and Darla Clark. First and third Sundays only.

Due to irregular and inadequate attendance of Sunday School children, the Vedanta Society of Portland will discontinue the Sunday School program this month. If this concerns you, please contact Swami Shantarupananda.

Personal

Swami Shantarupananda visited the Vedanta Society of Berkeley from Nov. 25 to Nov. 30.

Swami Shantarupananda gave a lecture on "Hinduism - Its Theories and Practices" at the Evergreen High School, Vancouver, Western Washington, on Wednesday, December 2, at 7:25 AM.

Swami Shantarupananda will visit Dallas, Texas, from Jan. 15 to Jan. 18.

Retreat

There will be no services at the Retreat Temple near Scappoose. However, the services will resume in the Spring.
